uTorrent patches application against DLL vulnerability
The developers of the uTorrent file-sharing application have released an updated version that fixes a problem that could allow an attacker to load malicious code onto a user's computer.
The problem, known as DLL (dynamic link library) load hijacking, affects dozens of commonly used Windows applications. The flaw can allow an attacker to trick an application into downloading what it thinks is a DLL but actually is a malicious file. A DLL is a piece of code that can be used by more than one application.
Three ways to Prevent USB Insecurity in Your Enterprise: Download now
The issue affects more than 40 applications including the Safari and Firefox browsers, many Microsoft and Adobe Systems applications and others including Skype and uTorrent.
UTorrent version 2.0.4 fixes the problem, although the company behind the application, BitTorrent, said that no attacks have been reported despite a working exploit.
"The new client disables loading of DLLs from the current working directory and prevents this exploit from functioning," according to the posting. "We take our users' security very seriously, and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience."
The DLL problem isn't specific to the Windows OS, and Microsoft can't issue a patch that makes all of the applications safe. Application developers and companies need to develop their own specific patches.
UTorrent is a free BitTorrent client application that manages the downloading of content from the peer-to-peer system, which uses small information files called torrent to coordinate downloads.

Microsoft builds Facebook chat into MSN Messenger
Microsoft integrating Facebook chat with MSN Messenger as part of an update to Windows Live Essentials 2011 Microsoft MCTS Training.
Windows Live Essentials is a collection of tools available free of charge from Microsoft, many of which have a strong focus on the internet, sharing and social networking.
Avoiding the Hazards of IT Consolidation: Download now
"Many of you have been asking for Facebook chat, and it's finally here," said Microsoft's Chris Jones in a blog.
"More than half of all Messenger customers also use Facebook. With the new Facebook chat integration, you now also have one place to chat with all your friends."
Web users downloading the latest version of Windows Live Messenger will be asked if they want to connect with their Facebook friends through the messenging app, while those who already use Windows Live Messenger can opt to connect with their Facebook account via their profile page.
Microsoft also said the upgraded version of Messenger was faster than previous editions and has a more efficient video chat function that uses 30 percent less CPU resources.
According to Mickael Remond, CEO of ProcessOne, the integration of Facebook into Messenger shows that social networks are increasingly becoming the preferred communications medium for a lot of people, as opposed to traditional instant messaging.
"It also shows the power of open protocols such as XMPP (on which Facebook Chat is based) for instant messaging and chat as it allows for communication between different messaging platforms, which is increasingly the way web communications is going."

Finishing up SharePoint 2010 Unleashed
Finishing up SharePoint 2010 Unleashed
It's been a long haul, but Michael Noel and I are putting the finishing touches on our newest tome "SharePoint 2010 Unleashed" from Sams Publishing. It took a good six months of work but I think readers will be pleased. During this time period we've been installing SharePoint 2010 for our clients, so we were able to validate our processes and recommendations "in the wild."
We worked hard to not just produce a book that walks through each and every feature provided by SharePoint (which number in the thousands) but to focus on the most important innovations in the product line that translate to actual end user value. We also focus on areas where SharePoint needs to interact with your existing network environment. For example, SharePoint's interaction with Exchange is critical for alerts to work and for in-bound emails to work. Likewise, SharePoint needs to be able to import Active Directory information for general functionality and to compile audiences and for other processes. SQL maintenance is important, securing SharePoint is important, and customizing SharePoint using SharePoint Designer 2010 and Visual Studio 2010 are more important than ever.
In the coming weeks I'll focus on best practices that correspond to SharePoint 2010 and expound upon them to build on what the book offers.

Microsoft IE gains browser market share (this is not a typo)
Microsoft IE gains browser market share (this is not a typo)
Internet Explorer has been in a freefall compared to its hotter rivals Firefox and Google's Chrome lately, but Microsoft's browser has finally reversed a small portion of its worldwide market share losses.
Just a year ago, IE share stood at 66.97%, but has since dropped every single month, hitting a low of 59.75% in May 2010. Firefox shot up from 22.98% to 24.32%, and Chrome from 2.84% to 7.04% during the same time period.

Firefox vs Chrome vs Internet Explorer
But Microsoft MCTS Training has crept back over the 60% mark, with 60.32% share in June, gained at the expense of Firefox, which fell to 23.81%, according to new data from the analytics firm Net Applications. Chrome and Safari both posted small gains.
Internet Explorer had already started to gain usage in the United States in May, but now the market share gains are being seen worldwide. IE's gains in June were larger in Europe and Asia than they were in the United States.
While older versions of Internet Explorer such as IE6 continue to lose share, in part because of concerns about security, Microsoft credited its June gains to a new marketing campaign called "Confidence" that is designed to show off the security features of Internet Explorer 8.
The IE boost comes from IE8, which gained .66% share globally.
"Internet Explorer 8 share continues to be the fastest growing browser with a 0.66% increase in share, more than 3 times the growth of Google Chrome, while Firefox share declined," Microsoft marketing official Ryan Gavin boasted in a blog.
It remains to be seen whether the short-term market share reversal becomes a more permanent trend. Gavin notes that "we certainly don't judge our business on just two months of data but the direction here is encouraging."
While IE8 is Microsoft MCITP Certification latest browser in wide use, the company is already showing previews of Internet Explorer 9, which will supposedly feature "speedy performance and … much-improved support for web standards."

Microsoft fourth quarter boosted by Office Windows sales
Microsoft fourth quarter boosted by Office Windows sales
The release of Office 2010, as well as continued strong sales of Windows 7, helped buoy Microsoft MCTS Training through another quarter of increased revenue and profit, the company announced on Thursday.
The company announced that net income for the quarter, which ended June 30, was US$5.93 billion, an increase of 49 percent over the same quarter a year prior.
Gartner Research Report: Load Balancers Are Dead: Time to Focus on Application Delivery: Download now
Fourth-quarter revenue of $16.04 billion was a 22 percent increase from the fourth quarter in the previous year, which was at $13.10 billion. Earnings per share for the most recent quarter were $0.51, a 50 percent increase.
Microsoft attributed much of the sales growth in the past quarter to Microsoft Office, launched during this quarter, as well as continued strong sales of Windows 7. The company noted that Windows 7 has sold more than 175 million licenses since it was launched last October.
For the fiscal year ending June 30, Microsoft MCITP Certification reported net income of $18.76 billion, a 29 percent increase from the prior year, and revenue of $62.48 billion, a 7 percent increase from the prior year. The company had suffered declining income, due to the sluggish economy, in the last fiscal year.
With this past quarter, the company had significantly exceeded investor expectations. A Thomson Reuters survey of analysts expected a 17 percent revenue growth over the year-ago quarter, reaching $15.3 billion.

Microsoft has lowered the price of Office for Mac with its 2011 release, which will hit stores in October with prices ranging from $99 to $279, Microsoft MCTS Training announced Monday.
The least expensive version of Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 will be a special edition for college students, staff and faculty, retailing at $99, while a regular home and student edition will start at $119 for a single installation, and $149 for a license allowing three installations.

Microsoft strikes blow against Google with Office 2010
Outlook for Mac will be included in the home and business edition, which will cost $199 for a single install and $279 for a single user who intends to use the software on two machines.
Outlook is also included in the Academic edition, but not the home and student version. All editions include Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Messenger.
Microsoft says the new pricing levels "map closer with Office for the Windows operating system," which ranges in price from $149.99 to $499.99.
Customers who purchase Office 2008 for Mac anytime between today and Nov. 30 will receive a free upgrade to the 2011 version when it becomes available two months from now.
But clicking on the upgrade offer shows that Office 2008 for Mac prices are still higher than the list prices announced by Microsoft MCITP Certification for the 2011 software. The 2008 home and student edition costs $149.95, while the business edition is $239.95 for an upgrade version or $399.95 for the full version.
