Microsoft's ads, humor boost consumer opinion of IE

But tech fans still think less of the browser than does the general public

Computerworld - Microsoft's recent campaigns touting Internet Explorer 9 (IE9), including a tongue-in-cheek promotion it unveiled last week, have moved IE's quality perception needle for U.S. adults, according to a brand quality measurement company.

"When we see an inflection [in the quality scores], we look at other events that are happening," said Ted Marzilli, the global manager for BrandIndex, a brand awareness and consumer perception service of U.K.-based YouGov.

While BrandIndex does not gauge reaction to specific ad campaigns, Marzilli called Microsoft's marketing moves "a contributing factor."

IE's perception index is at its highest level since January 2011, said Marzilli.

Microsoft has been running national television ads for IE9 and a week ago kicked off a "browser you loved to hate" website and video. In the latter Microsoft poked fun at computer enthusiasts who obsessively uninstalled IE from friends' and family members' PCs.

The ads and self-deprecating humor seem to have won over some people.

From March 5-14, BrandIndex measured a 10-point jump in the quality perception rating of IE among U.S. adults, and a nine-point increase in the group that identified themselves as early technology adopters. By March 16, IE's quality rating was 50 among U.S. adults, 44 among early adopters.

Not surprisingly, IE's rating is regularly higher in the general population than it is among early adopters, who have long criticized the browser as behind the times.

Mozilla's Firefox, meanwhile, also saw a jump in its BrandIndex score, ending March 16 at 44 for early adopters, 28 for the general public. Unlike IE, Firefox's early adopter score tracks above that of the general population, belying its standing as a more flexible alternative.

"Early adopters and fast followers have a more favorable impression of Firefox than the general population," said Marzilli. "That's in tune with those who consider themselves advanced users, who are usually more eager to explore new technology, and may want to use a more obscure browser because that separates them from their peers."

BrandIndex measures browser brand quality by interviewing 5,000 U.S. adults 18 and older daily, pulling the people polled from a pool of about 1.5 million Americans. Scores range from 100 to -100, and are compiled by subtracting negative feedback from positive, meaning that a score of zero is equal parts positive and negative.

BrandIndex doesn't ask people their take on Google's Chrome.

It's difficult to assess whether the spike in perception that BrandIndex reported has translated into more IE users.

But according to Irish Web metrics company StatCounter, IE's U.S. usage share for the seven-day stretch of March 9-15 was 42.3%, eight-tenths of a percentage point higher than the seven days prior. Since March 15, however, IE's average daily share has dropped to 40.8%.

Firefox's U.S. share also moved slightly this month, hitting a seven-day low of 21.3% the same week that IE peaked.

Microsoft: Don't hate on IE 10

Microsoft says in combo with Windows 8 touch, the browser has a lot of useful features

Microsoft says its latest version of Internet Explorer clears out a lot of clutter and creates a more immersive browser experience when paired with Windows 8's touch environment, and that it can be navigated by mouse and keyboard as well, although from the sounds of it not as elegantly.

In the company's most recent Building Windows 8 blog, the company explains the features new in IE 10, which comes with the download of Windows 8 Consumer Preview.

TEST YOURSELF: Windows 8 Quiz

HANDS-ON: Windows 8: No touch, no fun

HANDS-ON: Windows 8 test drive crash

The browser adapts many of the features of Metro style, the term Microsoft uses for the Windows 8 user interface that relies on monochromatic squares and rectangles branded with words rather than icons to move around the system.

The overhaul from IE 9 is major and requires some learning on the part of users, particularly those familiar with the older browser and how to get around.

For example, the new browser has no visible address or task bars, giving the site being visited top-to-bottom, side-to-side real estate that makes for more immersive viewing. Microsoft says this was inspired by versions of browsers used on mobile phones which feature less "chrome" - hiding tools until they are needed.

These commands can be accessed via "charms," which are icons that pop in from the edges when called up with either taps or mouse clicks, depending on whether the device has a touchscreen. The charms include Search, Share, Devices (printer, projector, etc.) and Settings (clear history, etc.).

The browser has its own Start screen similar to the one for the operating system. It includes a set of brightly colored tiles that show popular sites, frequently visited sites and favorites that get filtered out as users type in URLs in the address bar that appears across the bottom of the screen.

Windows 8 also supports pinning favorite sites to the main Windows Start page, so users can click on a tile for a Web site there and the browser will call it up, rather than launching the browser and seeking it via a tile on the IE Start screen.

Tabs are gone. Rather than a string of them across the top of the screen, a mini image of the last 10 tabs used can be drawn from the top or bottom with a finger swipe, typing Winidows Key/Z or a mouse click.

For touchscreen devices, a touch keyboard is customized for browsing, including a "/" key to the left of the spacebar and a ".com" key to the right. Similarly, when users are filling in email forms, the "/" key becomes an "@" key.

Web sites that offer a Metro style app can put a box on their sites that when clicked, bring users to that app in the Windows Store where they can download it.

Internet Explorer 10 bumps up security and privacy by extending InPrivate browsing to be run per-tab to block cookies, history and cached data rather than blanket for all tabs.

While it's not a how-to, the blog does point up important features for trailers of Windows 8 to check out. It does compare and contrast how to perform some functions both by touch and by keyboard and mouse, which reveals the comparative simplicity of touch.

Users familiar with using mouse and keyboard for older versions of IE will find that there are new and often unintuitive ways of getting around the new browser, a possible source of frustration.

Former Google exec rips new, more social Google

Whittaker says CEO Larry Page took his eye off innovation to chase Facebook
Computerworld - A former Google executive has said the company is so focused on advertising and its increasing rivalry with Facebook that the search company is going off track.

MCTS Training, MCITP Trainnig

Best Microsoft MCTS Certification, Microsoft MCITP Training at certkingdom.com

James Whittaker, who for nearly three years was an engineering director at Google until he left to work at Microsoft last month, lashed into Google CEO Larry Page and what he called the "new Google" in a lengthy post on Microsoft's blog.

Whittaker said he used to love working at Google and was an enthusiastic evangelist for the company. That all changed, he said, when the company stopped focusing on innovation and technology and turned to capturing advertising and going after the world's biggest social network, Facebook.

Google changed so much after Page took over the company's reins from former CEO Eric Schmidt last year that he said his last three months at Google were a "whirlwind of desperation."
Google Plus

Google did not respond to a request for comment by deadline.

Whittaker said he realizes that Google always has been an advertising company but under Schmidt's leadership, employees were focused on innovation and were lauded for developing new technologies.

"From this innovation machine came strategically important products like Gmail and Chrome, products that were the result of entrepreneurship at the lowest levels of the company," he wrote in his blog post. "Maybe the engineers who actually worked on ads felt it, but the rest of us were convinced that Google was a technology company first and foremost..."

Then Google executives realized that they had missed the opportunity on social networking. They saw that Facebook had an enormous user base and had become a major competitor for online advertising, Whittaker wrote.

"Larry Page himself assumed command to right this wrong," wrote Whittaker. "Social became state-owned, a corporate mandate called Google+. It was an ominous name invoking the feeling that Google alone wasn't enough. Search had to be social. Android had to be social. You Tube, once joyous in their independence, had to be ... well, you get the point."

He added that suddenly all innovation had to be focused on social. "Ideas that failed to put Google+ at the center of the universe were a distraction," Whittaker said.

It's not surprising to hear that Google is so focused on making all of the company's products and services connect with Google+. Page made that strategy clear last fall when he said he wanted to use Google+ to change the entire company.

"Our ultimate ambition is to transform the overall Google experience, making it beautifully simple, almost automagical, because we understand what you want and can deliver it instantly," Page said last October. "This means baking identity and sharing into all of our products so that we build a real relationship with our users."

According to Whittaker's blog, this plan wasn't a positive shift for the company.

"I think [Whittaker] is saying that the Google he knew was one that drove hard to develop innovative new products for the sake of serving users," said Dan Olds, an analyst with The Gabriel Consulting Group. "The old Google just tried to push out cool new things for users, and the advertising riches followed. This new Google seems to be trying to channel its efforts to satisfying advertiser, not user, needs. I'd argue that this approach will be less successful over the long term."

He added that Google's obsession with Facebook isn't healthy for the company. "Google has to get used to the idea that they can't be everything to everyone," said Olds. "They can't have all the toys in the store."

This isn't the first time that a Google executive has publicly aired his grievances with the company.

Enterprise IT likes what it sees in new iPad

Display, processing & LTE outfit new iPads for demanding users

The new third-generation Apple iPad is generally a hit with a sampling of enterprise users, based on quick reactions from half a dozen IT professionals and consultants. All like the greatly enhanced display, the graphics processing boost and 4G LTE wireless support.

MCTS Training, MCITP Trainnig

Best Microsoft MCTS Certification, Microsoft MCITP Training at certkingdom.com

But a few were hoping for a bigger processing boost or one of several specific features, a number of which Apple seems unlikely to ever deliver (like support for Adobe Flash Web content). And several noted that the real locus for enterprise benefits, and problems, lies in the latest update to the iOS firmware (release 5.1 for the new iPad), about which Apple has had little to say publicly.

Dubbed simply the "new iPad," Apple’s latest tablet features double the screen resolution of the iPad 2 and four times the pixels at 2048 x 1536, a slightly beefed up dual-core CPU (the A5X) with a new quad-core graphics processor, LTE cellular support, voice dictation, and a greatly improved rear-facing 5-megapixel camera. It will run iOS 5.1 and be available starting next week. Importantly, both pricing and battery life are unchanged.

Inside the iPad's worldwide ubiquity

iPad announcement through the eyes of Twitter

"The processor speed, 4G, and improved screen resolutions are all big pluses for the enterprise," says Manoj Prasad, vice president of global applications and testing for Life Technologies, a biotech products company in Carlsbad, Calif., with a growing iPad deployment. "4G, the new processor speed and improved screen resolutions will allow IT to port more backend applications like Oracle, and Siebel to iPad."

But he still thinks the tablet can’t yet substitute for laptops. "It still lacks the capabilities to completely replace laptops, making the ROI calculation for iPad difficult," Prasad says.

Others say Apple’s priorities for the new iPad means it can be applied in entirely new, emerging areas where laptops make no sense, or at least no sense anymore.

"For an understanding of where the iPad is going it's critical to note the focus on processing power and resolution," says Benjamin Levy, a principal with Solutions Consulting, a Los Angeles firm that specializes in Apple and iOS deployments for enterprise customers. "The iPad is no longer an addition to existing platforms and work structures but is now fully capable on its own and will be defining new ways of working with media in the professional space."

"The new iPad can be seen as more of a tool for digital media than ever before, able to work with high resolution DSLRs [digital single lens reflex camera images] and video, high resolution audio files, high resolution graphics files, etc.," Levy adds.

Although lacking the quad-core CPU that many were expecting, these users see real performance gains with the new iPad.

"The combination of the retina display, the [new A5X] chip and 4G/LTE is going to make the iPad an even more productive business device," says Hugh Owens, director of mobile at MicroStrategy, a business intelligence and analytics software vendor with an extensive iPad 2 deployment, and with iPad customers. "4G will enable users of MicroStrategy Mobile [the company’s iOS application] to pull down analytics even faster, and our native app is already positioned to take advantage of the A5X chip for faster and more compelling rendering."

"The iPad continues to be a great business device in consumer clothing," he adds.

"Overall, the new iPad is a significant upgrade. Apple is going to sell a boatload of these," says Derick Okihara, IT technician at Mid-Pacific Institute inHonolulu, where he oversees the iPad and iPhone deployments. "In our environment, having a solid camera capable of 1080p video, faster graphics for apps, and the high resolution display, make the iPad that much more useful, especially for students."

Levy sees camera applications that go beyond snapshots and home videos. "The camera improvements will be very useful, especially in custom apps for data entry, bar code reading, situation reports and documentation," he says. "Couple that camera with a decent custom app and many [enterprise] workflows can be changed for the better."

The new iPad is now more clearly, and effectively, a platform for creating new kinds of apps, and content, exploiting images, video, high-definition audio, in new ways, according to Randy Saeks, network manager, Northbrook/Glenview School District 30, Northbrook, Illinois, another iPad site.

"What I see in the announcement today is really showing that an iPad isn't just a consumption device but has the ability to create really rich, engaging content," he says. "With a lot of the [new] app updates and announcements -- iMovie, iPhoto, the iWork suite, as well as what is added to the hardware with a great display and improved camera -- it opens the door for how they can be used in classrooms and creative environments."

"Especially with looking at [the question of] what kinds of devices to put in the hands of our students, the value for what you can do with the new iPad and [its] associated cost is much more attractive than it was with the first iPad announcement," Saeks says.

Most of these users agreed they see no IT-specific implications in the new iPad, at least yet. "I'm not seeing any challenges to support the new devices," Saeks says.

"I’ll have to take a deeper dive into iOS 5.1," says James Gordon, vice president of IT at Needham Bank, a small community bank in Massachusetts that has deployed iOS devices among a majority of its staff and the board of directors.

An enterprise consultant with a federal systems integrator, who requested anonymity, echoed that attitude. "I hope to see more with iOS 5.1 once that is released," he says.

Apple’s decision to cut the price of the iPad 2 by $100, bringing the entry-level price to $399, may have a significant impact on deployments. "This opens up possibilities, especially in education markets with a lower buy-in price point," says Okihara. "$100 x 1,000+ [units] is significant."

Levy agrees. "By lowering the price on the iPad 2 while bringing advances into the new iPad, Apple is able to deliver new technology and features quickly to those who want them right away, while removing some of the barrier of entry to those who don't yet have an iPad," he says.

Gordon was hoping the rumors of a quad-core CPU were true. And at Life Technologies, where a lot of content is in Adobe Flash, the continued and apparently eternal lack of iOS support for that technology remains a complaint.

Prasad at Life Technologies also says he’d like to see direct video output for iPads.

"The bar for tablets and mobile computers has been set very high [with the new iPad]," says Gordon.

Why get an MCA certification?
Individuals who earn an MCA have achieved the capstone certification from Microsoft, proving their ability to architect large-scale complex solutions with Microsoft technologies. As such, they are recognized by Microsoft and the IT industry worldwide for having achieved the highest level of professional certification on Microsoft server products. MCAs report that their certification has brought them:

More market credibility
More effective deployment services

The MCA certification is granted after the candidate successfully passes the MCA Board exam, which includes a portfolio submission, multiple presentations, and an intensive Q&A with a panel of Microsoft Certified Architects on the MCA Review Board. During the MCA Board exam, the candidate must definitively display the six competencies of business acumen and technological proficiency.

MCA certifications
Microsoft currently offers four MCA certifications:
